In February 2012, Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University (CSU), has signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) in academic cooperation with Keck School of Medicine, the University of Southern California (USC).

Under the MOU, a three-year agreement on medical student exchange program between the two medical schools was effective on May 1, 2012. The purpose of the exchange program is to provide an opportunity for participating medical students taking clinical classes and participating in clinical observation/practice at the other institutions in an international setting. The program currently exchanges up to 4 medical students from each medical school every year.

In addition to the above student exchange program, the scope of activities under MOU includes: 

• Visits between the two schools by academic staff
• Visits between the two schools by technical and administrative staff
• Visits between the two schools by students
• Sharing of academic materials
• Collaborative teaching, research and publication
• Joint organization of conferences, seminars, or other academic meetings
• Joint organization of special technical or administrative programs
• Joint production and delivery of courses and programs
• Exchange of students between two schools

Xiangya School of Medicine proposes to send about fifty medical students abroad each year during next 10 years.
