President Annual Report
Xiangya Overseas Alumni Association
December 31, 2013

Dear Alumni and Friends:

Happy New Year!

Xiangya Overseas Alumni Association (XYOAA) wishes you and your family a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

I want to thank many alumni who have volunteered their time and efforts in supporting the course of XYOAA and in promoting the interests of our overseas alumni as well as that of Xiangya School of Medicine.

Xiangya Overseas Alumni Association was founded in 2002. Our missions are:

1. To promote alumni friendship and support their career development through education and exchange of information.
2. To support the growth and advancement of Xiangya Medical School and it’s affiliates through educational and scientific exchange between the School and the Alumni, the School and the medical and scientific institutions abroad.

There are near 1000 Xiangya alumni living and working abroad. As illustrated in the following slide, our alumni work and study in some of major universities, institutes, and hospitals as Ph.D. students, post-doc fellows, principal investigators, medical educators, and practicing clinicians. I feel enormously proud that our alumni have made tremendous contributions to scientific discovery, education and patient care.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to report to you what XYOAA has accomplished in the year of 2013.

1.            The Second Xiangya Milestone International Forum of Medicine

As a part of 30-year anniversary celebration of Class ’78 graduation, XYOAA partnered with XYSOM and the 2nd Xiangya Hospital and sponsored the Forum. The Symposium was held at the 2nd Xiangya Hospital on Sept. 14-15, 2013. The focus of this year’s forum was advances in diabetic and cardiovascular medicine and their peri-operative applications. A part of the Forum was also devoted to Medical Simulation and Patient Safety. There were several new initiatives added to this year’s program: 1) a clinical/basic research poster session. More than 30 posters were presented during the symposium. After careful evaluation by a group of overseas alumni, three posters were selected to receive XYOAA Poster Award; 2) Clinical panel discussions and 3) Students-Experts conversation. Overall, the symposium was well received. You can find more information on our website (http://www.xyoaa.org)

2.            Xiangya Medical Student Scholarship

On October 28, Xiangya Oversea Alumni Association (XYOAA) and Yale-China Association (YCA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to fundraise for YCA-XYOAA Xiangya Scholarship, which will exclusively benefit Xiangya medical students with financial need. The new fundraising campaign will begin in early 2014. Your support is vital to the success of the truly meaningful program. More detailed information will be available shortly on our website.
