Li-Ming Zhang (章利铭) was elected as the XYOAA President

 
On December 27, 2014, the Board of Trustees of Xiangya Overseas Alumni Association (XYOAA) elected Li-Ming Zhang, MD as its new president for the term of 2015-2016. His tenure starts January 1st, 2015.
 
Dr. Zhang is a board-certified anesthesiologist and has been practicing clinical anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) for more than a decade. He is currently an Associate Medical Director, UPMC China and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.  Dr. Zhang is a physician scientist and a principal investigator of NIH. His clinical interests include difficult airway management, perioperative patient safety and simulation as well as trauma anesthesia. His research interests are vascular cell biology and ventilator-induced lung injury.
 
He was the founding president of XYOAA Pittsburgh Chapter in 2002 and has served as an XYOAA vice president for a decade.  During the past three years, Dr. Zhang has served as an Executive Vice President of XYOAA.  He was the recipient of several awards including the New Investigator Award from the Foundation for Anesthesia, Education and Research and a Research Award from the prestigious Association of University Anesthesiologists. He has authored over 80 publications and trained numerous students, residents and physicians. Dr. Zhang has been advocating and facilitating Simulation Education at Xiangya and in China. He was the first to introduce simulation as an effective teaching tool for difficult airway management during 2007 annual meeting of Chinese Society of Anesthesiologists.

Over the past decade, Dr. Zhang has made enormous effort in promoting Xiangya and its major missions. Among many, he was instrumental in facilitating the collaboration between the WISER Simulation Center at the UPMC and the Clinical Skills Training Center at the Central South University. He was also instrumental in establishing the UPMC training program for Xiangya 8-year medical students. He is contributory in establishing Xiangya International Medical Center (XIMC) at Xiangya Hospital in collaboration with UPMC. 

Dr. Zhang graduated from Xiangya Medical University in 1985. He completed his internship at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital. After graduation, he became a faculty member in the National Training Center for Clinical Pharmacology at Xiangya School of Medicine. He received a fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology in the Radcliffe Infirmary at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom in 1987, and later as a postdoctoral research fellow in Clinical Pharmacology at the Medical University of South Carolina in the United States in 1991. He further pursued his anesthesia residency training at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School in 1997. He has been working in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center since 2000.

Dr. Zhang is married with two children, Lily and Catherine.  He enjoys his leisure time with his family and friends. He likes travel, fishing, and playing soccer, volleyball, golf and tennis.
