Dr. Wei Chao (巢卫) was elected as the President of XYOAA

Chao WeiXiangya Overseas Alumni Association (XYOAA, 湘雅海外校友会) was established in 2002 in Houston, Texas. The mission of XYOAA is “促进湘雅医学院旅居海外的学者及科技专业人才之间的信息交流和学术讨论,弘扬湘雅治学精神,促进海外校友和湘雅医学院之间的信息交流及科研开发,增强校友之间的友谊”. The Association has been managed by its Board and a team led by its president. Drs. Liang Wang 王亮(2002-2008) and Shaohua Hu 胡少华(2009-2011) are the two past presidents of the Association.

On December 10, 2011, the Board of XYOAA elected Wei Chao (巢卫) as the President of XYOAA for the term of 2012-2014. Wei Chao graduated from 湘雅 in 1982 (Class-77). After 3 years of study in Pharmacology, he was enrolled in 1986 into Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1991. Between 1993-1995, he was a postdoc research fellow in Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at University of California San Diego. He then completed his residency training in anesthesia between 1996-1999 at Massachusetts General Hospital(MGH), Harvard Medical School (HMS) in Boston. After the residency, Dr. Chao stayed at MGH as a faculty and pursued a physician-scientist pathway in cardiac research with Dr. Anthony Rosenzweig at HMS. Dr. Chao has won several awards including Tosteson Research Award at MGH, The William F. Milton Foundation Award from Harvard University, New Investigator Award from American Society of Anesthesiologists, and Physician-Scientist Career Development Award from National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. He is an elected member of the Association of University Anesthesiologists (AUA). Since 2003, Dr. Chao has maintained an independent research lab. His research has been mainly focused on the molecular mechanisms of ischemic myocardial injury and cardiac dysfunction during septic shock, in particular, the role of innate immune signaling in the critical illness. His lab (http://www2.massgeneral.org/anesthesia/index.aspx?page=faculty&subpage=chao) has been continuously funded by grants from American Heart Association (Grant-in-Aid) and the National Institutes of Health (K08 and R01s). He mentors Ph.D. students and postdoc fellows in his research lab as well as residents and clinical fellows in the hospital. He is the director of the MGH Anesthesia Resident and Faculty Research Mentorship Program. Currently, he is an Attending Anesthesiologist and Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School.
