Zhenqi Liu, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Virginia (UVA), was elected as President of the Chinese-American Diabetes Association for a term of two years during the 5th Chinese-American Diabetes Association Scientific Meeting in June 2013 in Chicago. The Chinese-American Diabetes Association is an organization with more than 100 prominent Chinese-American scientists and clinicians who are working in the area of diabetes and obesity, and each of whom is an independent investigator at an academic institution within the United States.  It fosters scientific exchange and collaboration among association members as well as the development of strong ties with the burgeoning research enterprise in diabetes and obesity in China.

Graduated from Xiangya School of Medicine in 1983, Dr. Liu came to the US in 1990 after his residency in Medicine/Endocrinology at the Second Xiangya Hospital. He worked as a research fellow, first at Yale then at UVA, before pursuing his residency in Medicine at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. in 1995. After additional two years of clinical fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at UVA, he joined the faculty at UVA and quickly moved up the rank. In 2012 he was promoted to professorship, and became Kenneth Crispell Professor of Medicine and Chief of Endocrinology and Metabolism division, in charge of all academic activities of a world class endocrine division including inpatient and outpatient services, research, medical education, fellowship training and faculty development.

Dr. Liu is a successful physician scientist. He was recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes by US News and World Report in 2012. With 12 researchers in his team and funding by the NIH and the ADA for more than a decade, he has authored or co-authored over 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as many book chapters, and has delivered a total of 76 talks and seminars at national and international meetings, and in many institutions around the world.

In addition to his contribution through the Chinese-American Diabetes Association, Dr. Liu has been supportive of medical research and education in Xiangya and China in various other ways. He is a member of the International Scientific Advisory panel for LADA China Study since 2006, and the Scientific Advisory panel for the Center for Metabolic Syndrome at Central South University since 2007. Most notably, he has collaborated with the endocrinologists at Xiangya for nearly a decade, and has helped in organizing the annual Xiangya International Diabetes Immunology Conference since 2006. At the 10th anniversary celebration of Xiangya Overseas Alumni Association in Houston on November 17, 2012, he was recognized with the Award for Outstanding Alumnus.
